Medicare Part D – Just A Few Days Left To Change Your Plan

Each year, individuals who are Medicare eligible have the opportunity to enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug coverage plan or change the plan in which they are currently enrolled It’s called the Open Enrollment period and it runs from October 15, 2016 until December 7, 2016. The coverage you choose will run through the calendar year 2017. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Part D program and do nothing, the plan you had this past year will remain in effect for the coming year.

Even if you liked your plan in the past, it is a good idea to review your policy, particularly if the medications you take have changed significantly during the past year. That’s because different drugs are covered in different ways by the many different companies that offer Part D plans in your area.

Either way, there are a few things you can do in advance to make your selection process easier.

  1. Compile a list of all the prescrption medications you are currently taking.
  2. Make sure you have your Medicare ID number available.
  3. Try to determine what plan you are currently on so you can compare it to other plans.

Remember, it is always a good idea to discuss this important decision with your primary physician, care giver or pharmacist. They can help you create the medication plan that works best for you and may be able to help you save money on prescription drugs in 2017.
