Anthem Considers Leaving ACA Marketplace

Columbia Tribune – Although a final decision has not been publicly disclosed, it appears that Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, a major health insurer, is considering leaving the ACA Marketplace as an insurer. Bleu Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City has already announced that it will not participate in the Marketplace in 2018.

Policies issued by these two companies will remain in force for the duration of 2017, but if both insurers exit the Marketplace, it will leave many Missouri counties with no Marketplace insurer. Marketplace policies are the only health insurance policies where individualsĀ can purchase insurance policies using an income-based tax credit.

Blue KC’s exit will affect 67,000 individuals who are currently insured through the Marketplace. Anthem provides Marketplace policies to a majority of Missouri counties, and could decide to continue participation on a limited basis, focusing primarily on larger urban areas like St. Louis, Columbia, Springfield and Cape Girardeau. If that happens, smaller counties could be without a provider. An announcement regarding Anthem’s decision is expected within the next few weeks.
